I went through my 5 weeks of radiation, waited 4 and a half weeks and had my surgery to remove my left breast Sep 21st, 2004, I did very well and the surgeon reported that the radiation killed all of the cancer cells around the tumor. I go back in March of this year for a scan and blood test, to see if LMS reacurs, I'll let you know of the out come, I'm praying and keeping my fingers crossed

Hi Nicole, I am a 44 year old woman who had surgery for uterine leiomyosarcoma in January, 2001. I had chemotherapy in the spring (Ifosfamide and Doxirubicin) and then radition in the summer. In December a routine chest x-ray showed numerous small nodules in my lungs. I was in shock - I was feeling great and had always thought that I would "know" if the cancer came back. I have since started on chemotherapy (Dacarbazine) and although the oncologist was not optimistic (at all...) because the response rate to this drug is low, my tumours are shrinking. The side effects from the drug are not too bad - diarrhea and loss of appetite and wright loss. Luckily I was a bit chubby when this recurred - I'm not any more ! Hair loss is not one of the side effects which was nice as my hair had just recovered from the plucked chicken look I had last spring and summer. Alos there should be a visible response on chest x-ray after two doses of Dacarbazine so it seemed worth a try. The other drug that my oncologist mentioned as a possibility if I didn't respond to Dacarbazine was carboplatin. It might be worth asking your mother's oncologist whether these drugs would be worth trying.
